Two key health information exchange (HIE) key players in San Diego are the Veterans Affairs (VA) office and Kaiser Permanente Hospital (KP) (OPIA, 2016). The VA and KP are working on a system the will enable VA patients to have their medical records transfer from the VA to KPs health connect (OPIA, 2016). Such a system makes will make it easier for VA patients to bring their records with them when transferring to a new provider, or switching from one specialty to another at a different facility. One challenge I foresee is allowing KP access to a system that is ran by the government. Being a veteran myself, I find this collaboration amazing. Even though my healthcare is covered by the VA, knowing that I can take my information with me if I opt in enrolling with a another health care provider through my current job is reassuring. I believe with the actions the VA and KP are taking, other health organizations will view this and figure a way they can partake in working with the VA. With so many veterans seeking medical attention, the VA is always looking for methods to help veterans get better and faster care instead of waiting for an appointment that is scheduled 3 months later. Maybe one day, all patients from any facility will be able to take their records and have them transferred or accessed from any other facility out there which they seek despite having an already established partnership.
